Bud Lancey #10, was among the first off-field evaluators that the BCFOA used. He was the Junior Big 4 officials’ evaluator as well as the UBC allocator and evaluator for several years. He set the stage for the development of our current evaluation system that helps to improve officials’ performances. Observation, written evaluation, and mentoring.
Bud officiated with great passion, and he evaluated with great passion. His passion for the Game showed in all he said and did.
A member since the 1960’s, Bud migrated to Canada from South Kitsap, Washington. He was a boxer in the American Navy and in British Columbia became a heavyweight champion. He briefly played semi-pro football in Victoria.
Bud worked in various capacities in the CFL for about 10 years and officiated high school football for over 20 years excelling at the umpire position.
While slowed by illness in the past several years, Bud’s “no-nonsense” straight-shooting approach prompted a change in attitude, commitment and determination for some, but made better officials of us all.
Bud was also a community football coach and assisted with the football program at Port Moody for many years.
As he was an avid collector of comic books and BIG LITTLE books, he also owned a comic book store.
Bud Lancey passed in January 2016.
His #10 jersey was officially retired.
