Hans Vanderdoe was born in Holland and the family later immigrated to Ontario. In high school Hans played volleyball and basketball as well as midget and jv football. He began his officiating career in the Toronto Football Association in July 1973, working high school and minor football games.
In 1978, he joined the BCFOA after being transferred to Vancouver and began officiating High School and Minor Football. He was assigned to CIS/U-Sport in 1982.
In 1985, Hans joined the CFL as an on field official. Later he also worked as a ball person, on the sticks, timing/observing assistant, and video replay assistant in its infancy at BC Lions games.
Hans has officiated many High School, Junior Playoffs and Championship games in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Some of Hans’s most memorable games are the 1982 Hardy Cup at U.B.C., 1990 Vanier Cup, 4 CJFL Canadian Bowls one as the Head Referee, number of CIS playoff games in 2000’s and the 2007 Mitchell Bowl Championship Game. He officiated in the C.I.S. for 35 years.
Hans also served on the BCFOA Executive as the Canadian Vice President. First elected in 1982, he remained in that position for 20 plus years. Served with Bill Diett, Bruce Hawkshaw, Bob Scott, Mark Newlove during their years as President.
Negotiated the first BCFC contract for game fees and travelling expenses. He also started a monthly newsletter that was sent by mail to the membership keeping everyone abreast of BCFOA news.
Allocator during the 80’s and 90’s, and in the 2020’s is still the current allocator for the Canadian side and the video reviewer educator for Junior Football.
Among his most memorable moments was his daughters and the Hawkshaw boys working the sticks at Junior Football games while in their early teens
Hans is a respected and dedicated official who brings his knowledge and experience to the forefront in mentoring young officials in the BCFOA.
