Bob Murphy played varsity high school football at Vancouver College in 1944 and 1945. He was a captain and MVP both years. He returned to coach in 1955. After graduating from UBC he taught at Cambie, Steveston, and finally Hugh Boyd High School until his retirement in 1987. Bob was instrumental in starting the high school football programs in Richmond and spent many years coaching and officiating football throughout the Lower Mainland.
He was a strong mentor to and member of the Steveston football coaching and officiating crew (Matt Phillips, Ian Anderson, Doug Staveley, Charlie Phipps).
Since the BCFOA was not a part of the NFHS at that time, Bob was very active in rulebook adaptation and interpretation which was something that Max Hatch later became involved with. He served on the executive in the 1960s.
He was described as a quiet, first class, decent person with a great sense of humour who is still missed by many people in the BCFOA community after his passing in 2010.
